Throughout history, there are rare moments when everyday Canadians are called to do something extraordinary—not because of their titles, wealth, or fame, but because they say yes when their community needs them most.
This is one of those moments.
From coast to coast, in small towns and rural communities across Canada, the traditions that bring us together—like the local fair or exhibition—are under pressure. Leaders are aging. Volunteers are harder to come by. Yet the need for connection, celebration, and community spirit has never been more important.
I launched the You Make THE Difference national initiative because I believe in rural Canada.
Because I believe your fairs are more than events—they’re a reflection of our identity, our history, and our values.
And because I believe the people who step up in these communities—the ones who roll up their sleeves, bring people together, and keep the heart of their town alive—deserve to be recognized, supported, and empowered.

You Make THE Difference is a national, grant-supported movement created to ignite, equip, and sustain the everyday leaders behind Canada’s fairs, exhibitions, and agricultural societies.

A Difference Maker isn’t defined by a title. They don’t wait to be asked. They don’t need the spotlight. They’re the ones who show up—especially when others don’t. They patch what’s broken, step in where needed, and stand up for the future of their community. Difference Makers are:

Why Now?
Because we’re living through a generational shift.
And if we don’t act now, we risk losing not just our fairs—but the deeper threads of community spirit they hold together.

My name is Ian Hill. I’ve spent over 30 years leading grassroots transformation across North America—breaking records, launching pioneering initiatives, and helping over 1,700 communities strengthen their future.
But this may be the most meaningful work I’ve ever done.
Because I believe the heartbeat of this country still lives in its small towns.
And I believe it’s our shared responsibility to rekindle that fire—starting with the fair, and the people who make it all happen.
